Background to the Awards

Background to the Awards

Spatial data are part of everyday life. Easily accessible, high quality and up-to-date spatial data and services are essential to a smart city. To propel Hong Kong’s development into a liveable, smart, and innovative city, Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (“CSDI”) was launched in December 2022 to facilitate searching, viewing and downloading of various kinds of spatial data for free by the general public.

More about CSDI can be found below:

To promote CSDI and to raise the public’s interest in spatial data, Geospatial Lab, established by the Development Bureau, is organising the CSDI Awards 2024 – “Present Spatial Data, Map our Future” (the “Awards”). The Awards is aimed to encourage students and the public to creatively use spatial data to address challenges we faced in the city.

[Throwback to CSDI Awards 2023]

Ms Leung Wing Mui Shirley, the principal of Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary School, one of our participating schools, shared her thoughts on the Awards:

"The Awards undeniably offer a valuable learning space for students and encourage collaboration between teachers and students, resulting in a sense of accomplishment and recognition for their achievement. With the support of the Government, the availability of Open CSDI data, the workshops and consultation provided by the Geospatial Lab, and the guidance of many devoted mentors, we have been presented with numerous opportunities to participate in the competition. These opportunities, combined with the dedicated efforts of our teachers and students, have established a solid foundation for our students to extend their learning beyond the curriculum and excel in the Awards."

Hope the experiences of joining the Awards have not only enriched our participants’ educational journey but also instilled a sense of accomplishment and a passion for addressing real-world challenges through spatial data usage and analyses.
